The
Cascina Capuzza restaurant is found at approximately 85m above sea level,
on the morenic hills created from a glacier, which when it melted
created Lake Garda. Situated
in San Martino della Battaglia in the hamlet of Selva Capuzza from which
it gets its name, it is documented on maps since 1850 when it was called
“Casetta Catuzzi”. The change of name seems to stem from an
Italianisation of the dialect form of “cappuccio”, as in the top of
a hill, indicating its location. The
house is located at the heart of what was the battle ground of the
famous battle between San Martino and Solferino in 1859, the
Austrian-Hungarian front was formed along the ridge on which the Cascina
Capuzza and Borgo San Donino stand. The
Cascina was mainly used for raising cattle and small courtyard animals
until the 60’s. It
was slowly renovated with work starting in 1980, with special attention
being paid to keeping its original rural characteristics. |
